Pottery classes are one hour and 15 minutes long for teens and children and two hours long for adults. Classes meet once a week for ten weeks with no class in accordance to the Summit Public School system schedule. Class size is limited to six students for all wheel throwing classes and eight students for all handbuilding classes. Additional “open studio” time is included for all registerd students ages 12 and older who are able to work independently. Class projects vary each season and are age and skill appropriate.

Beginning wheel throwing students will learn to wedge, center, open, pull walls, trim and glaze. Forms to be taught are the basic cylinder, cup and bowl. All students will have their own wheel to use during class. Extruding, slabrolling, and handle pulling/attachment will also be taught in this class.

Handbuilding-wheel throwing combo students will learn all basic skills involved in coilwork, pinching, slabs, texturing, stamping, and glazing. They will also have opportunities to throw on the pottery wheel with one on one assistance. Handbuilding project ideas are designed to have each student make a structured piece while still stimulating their imagination. Pieces may include slab pots, press molds, animals, figures, and coil pots. This class is ideal for children between the ages of 6 and 8 who are not quite ready to throw on the wheel independently.

For the intermediate wheel throwing student, classes will focus on gaining more control over the clay and will explore making lidded forms, plates, altered shapes, handles, and throwing off the hump. Students are encouraged to let their imaginations go.
